We won the Madrid in Game HackJam 10 with Next Stop: Madrid
A game about exploring Madrid by bus, built in 48 hours with the EMT at 42 Madrid. It won its category.
In January I took part in the tenth HackJam by Madrid in Game, Madrid City Council’s initiative to grow the video game industry. This time the challenge came from the EMT, Madrid’s municipal bus company: make games about getting around the city, in 48 hours, at 42 Madrid Fundación Telefónica.
There were 112 participants in 20 teams. Ours entered Next Stop: Madrid in the “Exploring the City by bus” category, and won.
The game
You drive a bus through Madrid: dodge cars, pick up passengers and pass the city’s landmarks to get as far as you can. Every place you pass is saved to a map of your route, the Travel Map. It is an arcade game that is easy to pick up and hard to put down, and you can play it for free on itch.io.
How we built it
We were a small team: four programmers and a 3D artist. Not everything fits into 48 hours, so we trimmed the original idea down to what made the game fun and polished that.
